“Crescent Moon at Sunset,” chalk pastel by Maria Theresa Maggi
The moon is new at 20 degrees Scorpio of the tropical zodiac on November 13, 2023 at 1:27 AM Pacific Standard Time.
Scorpio is the eighth sign of the tropical zodiac, and the second water sign, coming after Cancer, the first one, and Pisces, the last one. Along with Taurus, Leo and Aquarius, it’s also a fixed sign, where we learn through experience and the force of karmic will.
This Scorpio new moon we begin by going deep. We take a deep dive psychologically, emotionally or spiritually—wherever we sense the most access to our own power lies. While Taurus defines the foundation of our own resources and values, both material and psychological or emotional, Scorpio, its opposite, reigns over those resources and values that come down to us through others. Inheritances, legacies, emotional traumas or traditions, taxes we owe, surgeries, and all the attending processes of life and death, including literal birth and death, are all the domain of Scorpio. While Taurus may weigh in on the sensual details of pregnancy and birth, it is Scorpio energy that instantly senses the significance of a birth or a death in terms of how it shifts the whole power dynamic in an extended family.
A defining feature of this Scorpio new moon chart is that the Scorpio sun and moon are very close to Mars, still traveling in late Scorpio. The aspect is what astrologers call “applying” which means its effect is even stronger than if they had already passed Mars by but were still close.
In the last two posts I talked about the significance of Mars entering Scorpio and I want to remind us of that significance, since it pervades the theme of this entire lunation cycle by its proximity to the new moon.
Mars so close to the moon makes emotional instinct incisive and also seductive. It’s important to remember that this energy draws others to it in a seductive way and yet can cut very close to the emotional bone. It’s essential to use that magnetism to help, not hurt others, including one’s self, so that the “cutting” promotes new growth, not more damage
